Distortion of Korea's History - Lahu Is a Descendant of Goguryeo?

Yoo graduated from Seoul National University's Department of German Language Education and studied phonetics at the graduate school's linguistics department, and taught Lahu Hangul at Gosan Village in northern Thailand for the production of MBC Hangul Day Special in 2001. Now I work as a copywriter for Daehong Corporation. [Editor Note] On June 22, 2001, I took a flight to Thailand. At that time, I, a graduate student in linguistics, was supposed to appear on a Hangeul Day commemorative show that was proposed by one of the linguistics professors to MBC. The content was to teach Korean characters adapted to Lahu in the Lahu village, one of the ethnic minorities scattered in the mountains of northern Thailand. Northern Thailand is a mountainous highland. In the high mountains here, several ethnic minorities called "sanjok" live with their own language and lifestyle. These ethnic groups were people who wandered through the slash-and-burn fields, most of which originated in Unnam Province, China. From the vicinity of Unnam Province in China to the northern Indochina Peninsula (myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam in the country), these ethnic groups live on a village-wide basis in the alpine region. Among them, it is said that the mountain people living in Thailand were mostly on the Myanmar side and crossed the border to avoid the conflict. They usually make a living by farming mainly on mountain rice, and some villages provide accommodation and food to tourists from all over the world to see their unique lifestyles and traditional clothes, or take pictures in traditional clothes, and live in return. The Lahu are one of those minorities. The "wrong lighting" and "camera directing" Lahu, which follow the taste of the public, are mountain tribes that often appear in Korean broadcast documentaries. The story of the Lahu people, who have heard of it, is an imagination that they are descendants of Goguryeo refugees. It suits the taste of the public so well that I get on the air once in a while when I'm about to forget it. Of course, it's actually complete nonsense. If you do a little research and meet the people of Lahu, it's easy to see that it's not true. Unlike those edited in broadcast programs, their culture, language, and appearance clearly indicate that they are from Unnam Province and are of southern descent. It can be seen from a day of language research that most of the reports on Lahu by those who claim Goguryeo origin are false. Even the text list my professor gave me didn't fit Lahua, so I had to modify it. The people who produce the broadcast know that. The producer, who has extensive experience in producing humanities documentaries, said that the ritual tools of the Lahu Xiamen match exactly those of Unnam Province. All of the production crew knew that the Goguryeo origin theory was nonsense, but when the village chief said, "We came here 30 years ago to avoid war in Burma and settled down," the production was carried out by putting on a false dubbing, "We came from a snowy place." Since it was an outsourced production company, it seemed difficult to go against the theme and production policy designated by the broadcasting company. No wonder, outsourced production is "B." No matter how "A" is in an advantageous world, I think we need a device to prevent A's tyranny when making a documentary, especially a broadcast program that needs to consider the public interest. Most people believe broadcasting documentaries at face value. As a graduate student, it was difficult to put a brake on the work related to the professor without permission, so I stayed still so that the program could be produced and broadcasted. It's the biggest regret I've ever had in my life. At that time, I was the only one who could prevent the distortion of the truth. Living a month and a half in the mountain top village, where the border between Myanmar and Thailand is said to take three hours on foot, you will see how dangerous and uncomfortable it is for them to get the wrong lighting in this way. In the first part, I described the political dangers of spreading Hangul to minorities. They live in Thailand but live in poor minorities without nationality or freedom of residence, so claiming them to be "part of the Korean people" without clear grounds can pose a similar risk. Moreover, it is not right to freely attach their history, which is not recorded in writing. This is not the main point of this article, so let's move on. Let me introduce you to a reliable reference book on this issue. This is Kang Heon's 1994 book, The Golden Triangle. Lahua, a hidden situation where you could learn Hangul in a short period of time, has Romanization, as is most minority languages. The Lahu people have a long history of Christian missionary work, and Roman notation is stably established, and the Lahu Bible, hymn book, dictionary, and Lahu textbook written in Roman letters are spread to a considerable extent. Christianity spread in the villages I went to, and many people knew Romanization. If I had known about this situation beforehand, I might not have stepped into the program. Anyway, what I heard from my teacher, the professor, wasn't like that, so I climbed to the top of the mountain with the production team, thinking that I was doing something very meaningful. Anyway, will they be able to learn Korean for about a month because they have never been to school and cannot communicate with me? People must have learned how to write from the program, right? People learned writing easier than they thought. The local missionary, who taught them Romanization, was also surprised. In my opinion, it is true that Hangul is easier to learn than other letters due to the characteristics of Hangul to be revealed in the next article. However, there were several hidden reasons why the villagers were able to learn Hangul in a short period of time. The Korean Lahu characters I took do not make and collect whole letters like the Korean letters we use. The vowels and consonants are made independent, and vowels are unconditionally written on the right side of the consonants. In addition, Lahu is a language that has no consonants, such as Japanese. There are no nasal consonants even in Japanese. Therefore, it is a Korean-based text, but it will be easier to learn than the Korean letters we use. Also, all the students I taught were people who went to church and knew Roman notation well. Due to various local circumstances, I had no choice but to teach Roman alphabet and Korean notation one-on-one to those who knew Roman alphabet. Of course, it's different from teaching people who have no concept of writing. In addition, it is also a big reason that the villagers paid for learning to write. In fact, there is no need to learn Korean characters from them. That's because, as I mentioned in the first part, the need for them to use their own language in writing is extremely limited, and when necessary, they use the Roman alphabet that they already have. Moreover, they are poor. There is no way that they would voluntarily take time to learn letters for classes that are not even necessary to earn and eat from day to day. Therefore, the production company decided to pay a certain amount of money to the person who mastered the words to them in order to complete the program. So I was able to continue the class in which an average of more than 10 people participated even when the production team returned home from the first shoot. Speaking of "ethnic" reports that precede confirmation of facts, you know why I called this program "show" rather than "documentary"? In fact, most documentary films require a little production. You can't get the scene you want just by putting the camera flat on the way people live. However, in the case of the program I appeared in, the story and background of the program itself were fictional. In addition, in order to establish that I entered the village alone and lived with hospitality from the villagers, I demolished and rebuilt a decent bamboo house. Even though I received money, I still feel like I want to go into a rat hole when I think about the villagers who laughed in front of the camera that was used for an English show and went back again and again. Anyway, on August 7th of that year, I have been wandering around since I returned home after finishing all the filming. I gave up becoming a linguist. Without that, I think I would have become a linguist with excellent ethnic passion, as is often the case with Korean scholars who took Korean as the theme. In our country, being "ethnic" is easily accepted as "good." However, we do not know who and what kind of violence we will use when we rely on the authority of academics and the media without a clear examination of the reason it has awakened. I don't think it's unusual for me to think of that time when I saw some media that wrote articles without checking the facts and even published hasty columns about Hangeul.

 He was born from 1855 (Cheoljong 6) to 1935 in Nakwon-dong, Seoul. Although he had never received medical education, he longed for Western studies from early on and devoured Western medical books translated from China, and what he was particularly interested in was the British Jenner (E.)'s method of preventing naturalpox. In 1876 (the 13th year of King Gojong's reign), the Byeongja Protection Treaty was signed with Japan, and Park Young-seon, Ji Seok-young's teacher, went as a receptionist that year, begging him to investigate the actual status of the Bell Head Law in Japan. Therefore, Park Young-sun learned how to play the cowpox and handed it down to Odaki and obtained a bellwether of the old family. After that, he went to the Jesaeng Clinic in Busan established by Sea of Japan-gun in 1879 and learned how to do the vaccination for two months from the director Matsumae and the military Dozuka, and on his way back to Seoul, he stopped by Chungju, where his wife was. This is the beginning of the implementation of the public vaccination law by Koreans. The following year, he returned to Seoul and performed Jongdu and received favorable reviews. However, the supply of the head mausoleum was not good, so in 1880, he went to Tokyo as an attendant of the 2nd receptionist Kim Hong-jip, where he learned how to make, store, and use the head of the sanitation bureau. He learned Western medicine from Maeda in the military while creating a tomb in Seoul and distributing Bell Heads. When the Imogunate broke out in 1882, an arrest order was issued for learning how to vaccinate in Japan. He quickly fled, but the bellows were burned down by the arson of refugees. As the political situation changed, he returned to Seoul and rebuilt the Jongdujang Market. At the invitation of Jeolla-do Eosa Park Young-gyo, he set up a cowpox soup in Jeonju and taught the bell-head method while conducting a bell-head, and the following year, he also made a cowpox soup in Gongju at the request of Chungcheong-do Doors Lee Yong-ho. Hanseong Sunbo published an article on foreign vaccinations, and the Bell Head Act became widely known. While striving to spread the Bell Head Act in this way, he entered the liberal arts department in 1883 and served as Sungkyunkwan University and Saheon Buipyeong. In 1885, the new theory of Udu was created by combining the knowledge and experience accumulated so far. This is the first book in Korea about cowpox method, and it briefly describes Jenner's discovery of cowpox method, the implementation of cowpox, treatment of smallpox, the manufacture of cowpox, and the method of specifying and collecting dogwood. In the same year, as a professor of cowpox, he made great achievements by touring the Jeolla-do region and serving as a servant, and even after being exiled to Sinjido Island in Gangjin, Jeollanam-do in 1887, he still conducted cowpox. After being released from exile in 1892, he returned to Seoul, and the following year established Uduboyeongdang and served as a servant to many children. With the Gabo Reform in 1894, he was in charge of the head of the Hygiene Bureau, so he was able to proudly distribute the head of the head. With the inauguration of the Kim Hong-jip cabinet, he served as Dongnae Magistrate through his brother's councilor and Seungji, but he did not forget to conduct cowpox in the forest. He proposed the establishment of a medical school to the Minister of Education, and when the medical school was established in 1899, he was appointed as the first principal. He invited Japanese teachers to translate and teach Japanese medical books. In 1902, a hospital affiliated with a medical school was established in Hundong at his initiative, and the following year, the medical school produced 19 first graduates. He published Yangmaechang Theory in the Hwangseong Shinbo to inform the public of the detoxification of syphilis, and insisted on making prevention methods for whole areas (acute infectious diseases, infectious diseases, and rashes caused by malignant syphilis). In 1907, the medical school was abolished and reorganized into the Ministry of Education of the Korean Assembly, and he took office as the dean. Since he resigned in 1910, he has devoted himself to medical education for 11 years. His achievements were not limited to the introduction of modern medicine. In an appeal posted in 1882, he stressed the need for rapid flowering and insisted on establishing a kind of training center for this purpose. It was an ambitious plan to collect books on the world situation at that time and books on foreign science and technology, collect various artifacts available, and show and teach them to young people who have been selected from all over the country. As such, he opened his eyes to flowering early, and in the late 1890s, he was a major member of the Independence Association. He participated in various debates hosted by the Independent Association and presented his opinions, thereby expanding his perspective. When most of the other members were focused on accepting Western culture, they seemed to have a different idea. For example, he mainly used the lunar calendar, but also suggested marking the solar calendar next to it. In addition, it was believed that the reason for the delay in flowering was that it was difficult to write Chinese characters, and in 1905, it was argued that easy-to-understand Hangul should be used to promote education widely. Moreover, he was a pioneer who insisted on horizontal writing of Hangeul along with Ju Si-kyung. In 1908, he was appointed as a member of the Korean Literature Research Institute, and the following year, he made up a Jajeonseokyo, which interpreted Chinese characters in Korean. His argument was recognized and accepted a lot, and King Gojong acknowledged his contributions and gave him Taegeukjang and Palgwaejang. However, soon after the annexation of Korea and Japan, all public offices were abandoned. There was a desperate request for cooperation from Japan, but he was buried in the middle of the night and ended his life at the age of 80.

History Club Member's Personal Opinion - The Future of Korea After Unification

 There are some Koreans who oppose unification or have passive thoughts because the national economy can be difficult if it is unified. This is a misconception that arises only in the case of German reunification, which stems from a short-sighted way of thinking. In fact, if our country is unified, the economy could become temporarily difficult. Increased unemployment due to economic deterioration, cost burden due to vulnerability of all facilities in North Korea, difficulty in integrating the extreme economic size difference between the two (20:1), overcoming half-century of isolated heterogeneity... But the long-term benefits of unification are far more... No, it's incomparably big. Our unification effect cannot simply be compared with Germany. This is because Germany and Korea have different forms of division. This is a problem that can be easily concluded after reviewing some data. First, when unified, our country's population will be 70 million and the area will be 220,000 square. This size is by no means a small country. When considering the economic power of each country, we look at the domestic market of the country's domestic market. Hyundai companies have a lot of difficulties in terms of competitiveness if the domestic market is small. The standard is estimated at 70 million worldwide. And when we look at South Korea, we are saturated with population, factories, and pollution. Second, it can attract foreign investment and investment by foreigners much more than now. The biggest reason why foreigners are reluctant to invest in Korea is that there is a risk of war because Korea is a divided country. The advantages are different from those of Germany. Germany is not a country that was at higher risk of war than us. Even now, South Korea's stock price drops sharply just by shooting a missile as an experiment in North Korea. Third, the reduction of defense spending. Currently, it maintains 1.8 million troops in total. 1.8 million is equivalent to the population of a country. It's really costing us astronomical amounts of money to maintain this large force. Even if it is unified, the army will continue to be maintained, but even if the military is reduced to 1/5 of the current level, it is possible to calculate the Gyeongbu Expressway with only a year's worth of money. Fourth, the influx of cheap labor in North Korea can fill the 3D labor force currently being filled by Southeast Asians. Currently, a lot of foreign currency is being withdrawn to the home country of foreign workers due to their foreign labor force, and if filled with North Koreans, foreign currency outflow can be prevented. Fifth, it is a huge amount of tourism revenue. Currently, Korea is the world's 17th largest tourist importer. Korea's tourism revenue is not very small, but if it is unified, Korea will become one of the top 10 tourism powers in the world due to increased cognitive effects due to unification, if it boasts clean scenery such as Geumgangsan Mountain, Myohyangsan Mountain, Baekdusan Mountain, and DMZ. Sixth, it is to advance to the mainland. Why did we betray Taiwan and establish diplomatic relations with China overnight? When unified, it passes through Yanbian, where our compatriots are in self-government, and even Beijing, China, it is a direct bread. Vladivostok in Russia is also straightforward. There are a lot of my countrymen there, too. Now, Japan is trying to break through an undersea tunnel with our country. Until we do such work, we are not that close to each other and there are various problems, so there is no full-scale discussion, but if it is unified, they will probably step up first and open an undersea tunnel at the expense of Japan. The opening of land routes to the continent is a tremendous adventure. Seventh, there are various effects of unification. For now, South Korea has the world's 11th largest economy with a population of 47 million. What about the size of the 70 million economy? Increasing the awareness of people around the world due to the expansion of the country's size is also a great. There are also underground resources and fishing resources that are not developed in North Korea. I'd like to look for more. Currently, we are losing too much compared to our ability to divide. The previous state bankruptcy caused the IMF economic support situation, but it has the potential to repay it in two years and return it to its current state. It is ridiculous not to unify because of the difficulties caused by unification temporarily. Germany is now the most competitive country in Europe after reunification, excluding its national defense capabilities. In addition, the volume of trade overtook Japan last year and rose to second place in the world. Let's not be pessimistic about reunification.
